Today, I went to the beachfront with my children. I found a sea shell and gave it to my 4 year old daughter and
ReplyDeletesaid "You can hear the ocean if you put this to your ear."
She placed the shell to her ear and screamed. There was a hermit crab
inside and it pinched her ear. She never wants to go back!

Issue with Gossen Ascor Flash Meter? I am not a Certified
ReplyDeletePhotographer. Why would you buy a Flash meter then want to go threw Mathematical Gymnastics that would defeat the reason for
Buying a Flash Meter. On your Mark II go to the Grey ring
bring it till f=1:2.8 lines up with 1 top scale get 5 Ft.
or closer to your Subject with your Vivitar Flash and...
show more As I understand your question: Flash meter set
for 200 speed film and you are using 200 speed film.
Meter tells you: flash to subject distance 4 ½ feet set aperture to f/16.
You are concerned that working in this close will promote Red Eye.
You wish to step back to a camera/flash distance of 8 to
10 feet and you do not know what aperture setting to use should you shoot from 8 thru 10 feet.
Answer: Guide number to the rescue. A flash guide number is an mathematical aid that
will help you figure out what aperture to use. If a setup is accurate for a
given distance we can find a guide number that is appropriate.
In this case we are told f/16 will deliver a good exposure when the flash to subject distance is 4
½ feet. We multiply 4.5 X 16 = 72. Since a guide number is just a “guide”
OK to round to 75. Now step back to any convenient distance, say 7 feet.
Now divide distance into guide number thus 75 ÷ 7 =
10.7 round to nearest f/# -- in this case 7 feet @ f/11.
How about 12 feet thus 75 ÷ 12 = 6.2 set this as the f/# or round to next closest value which is f/6.3 or if not available f/5.6.
How about 10 feet – then 75 ÷ 10 = 7.5 set
to this f/# or if unavailable round answer to f/8. Now that’s’ easy.
As to Red Eye – This is a reflection of the flash in the subject’s eye.
It is caused by the flash being placed too close to the lens.
Professionals use a dismounted flash and hold it at arm’s
length from the camera or they point the flash at the ceiling to simulate lighting from above.
Also a filter reduces flash intensity. You can reset the ISO to
100 and this will cancel out the absorbance of the filter.
Or you can open up one f/stop as compensation. Thus
if you are to shoot at f/8 without filter, then open up to f/5.6
to allow more light to enter the camera. Best of luck
– Flash and guide numbers are a trial and error thing.
Is chicago safe to visit? Most of the north and northwest side neighborhoods are Alright;
ReplyDeleteand the areas near downtown (Loop, near west aspect up
to Damen Ave and near south aspect up to about 21st St or so) are also Okay.
Stay out of the 'hood and areas which have graffiti, abandoned vehicles,
burglar bars, etc.: of training course there is nothing at all
worth seeing in those areas, anyways. Also, IGNORE panhandlers, beggars, etc.
no matter how pathetic they look like: don't actually appear at them:
just keep walking!
