Jonathan’s N21.27bn campaign war chest: Lawyers demand PDP, donors’ trial
Some lawyers, including Senior Advocates of Nigeria, have called for the prosecution of the Peoples Democratic Party and those who donated over N21. 27bn towards President Goodluck Jonathan’s electioneering.
They said in separate interviews with The PUNCH on Tuesday that the donors breached the Electoral Act by exceeding the limit stipulated by the Act.
Section 91(9) of the Act reads, “An individual or other entity shall not donate more than N1,000,000 to any candidate.”
Sub-section 10 of the same section adds that a presidential candidate “who knowingly acts in contravention of this section commits an offence and on conviction is liable to a maximum fine of N1m or imprisonment for a term of 12 months or both.”
Section 91(2) of the same Act states that, “The maximum election expenses to be incurred by a candidate at a presidential election shall be N1bn.”
The lawyers – Prof. Itse Sagay, Femi Falana, Emeka Ngige, Mr. Jiti Ogunye and Monday Ubani – said the Peoples Democratic Party dinner/fund-raiser on Saturday was the height of impunity by the ruling party.

Buhari will end insurgency-Amaechi
The Director-General of the All Progressives Congress Presidential Campaign Organisation, Rotimi Amaechi, on Tuesday called on Nigerians to vote out President Goodluck Jonathan in the 2015 elections.
He said only a “strong leader” like Maj. Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (retd.) could tackle insurgency and corruption in the country.
Amaechi said prayers alone could not rescue the nation from the brink of collapse and underdevelopment.
Nigerian army set to court martial 118 more soldiers.
Some army officials said 118 soldiers have been transported from Maiduguri, the Borno State capital, to face charges in Abuja, a week after 54 soldiers were sentenced to death for refusing to fight Boko Haram.
It is not clear when the troops will be arraigned before a Military Court, but our sources said unlike their colleagues who were convicted last Wednesday, the soldiers awaiting trial are not accused of mutiny.
the soldiers are accused of relatively minor charges including loss or misplacement of rifles during operations against Boko Haram.
The allegations follow repeated reports of troops fleeing Boko Haram fighters and abandoning their weapons for the militants in the Borno and Adamawa States. Army spokesperson, Olajide Laleye, said he was unaware of the development.
Akpabio, Jang, Imoke, Suswam, others donate N1billion to PDP while owing workers for months
As representatives of 21 Peoples Democratic Party [PDP] governors mounted the rostrum Saturday night at the presidential villa in Abuja to announce N1.05 billion in donation to the PDP, back in their respective states, school teachers and other state workers were enduring their second or third month of work without pay.
In Ebonyi, authorities owed teachers under the Universal Basic Education scheme nearly 12 months of salaries.
In Abia State, secondary school teachers were last paid in August, while primary school teachers have been owed since October.
In Akwa Ibom State, the nation’s leading oil producer which draws more than triple of what other states receive from the federation account monthly, local government staff were on strike. Before the strike, they were forced to receive half salaries for several months, while authorities claimed they had no money.
In Cross River, the situation had worsened after months of indebtedness that state-run television, the Cross River Broadcasting Corporation, CRBC, shut off production last week.
The station remains off air till date. Other staff fortunate to have received reasonably up-to-date pay, have yet to be paid for November.
***God's wrath is just around the corner for these people. taking from the poor to feed the already fat rich. may God judge all of you ooh. i pity the poor state workers.. O ma shey ooh.***
Buhari raises about N54M from crowd for campaign.
Presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress, Maj. Gen. Muhammadu Buhari, has said his desire not to become a hostage to anyone is the reason behind his decision to rely on the sacrifices of ordinary Nigerians to fund his campaign.
Buhari said this at a press briefing on the Maj. Gen. Muhammadu Buhari Crowd Funding Platform, in Abuja, on Tuesday.
This is even as he announced that N54, 415,386.70 had so far been received as donations through direct deposit and sale of cards.
He expressed the confidence that the financial support he was receiving from ordinary Nigerians would see him through the campaign period.
Buhari said, “My strength mainly are the ordinary people and the N100 they are contributing. It is a lot of money for them but I know they will make the sacrifice especially when I said I am not going to sign the cheque to get even a kobo out of that account.
“That is why I depend on them. We are taking this idea from what we have seen in the United States when Barack Obama came out to contest, he was a coloured person, the big companies were not for him and so on.
“But he knew he had foot soldiers, so when he came up with this idea, he was able to finance his campaign without looking for money-bags or anybody influential. So, he remained independent and was not held hostage by anybody. And this is what I want to achieve.”
May God give us the right leader...
