Mayhem in Lagos •Four killed, 27 vehicles destroyed in gang war
Pandemonium broke out in the Mosafejo, Oshodi-Isale area of Lagos State, after rival groups said to be members of the National Union of Road Transport Workers, clashed on Tuesday evening and early Wednesday.
Four people were reportedly killed, while several others were injured in the fracas which was stopped after the intervention of security agencies.
PUNCH Metro gathered that no fewer than 15 commercial buses were set on fire, while 12 others were vandalised.
Makeshift stalls in the Mosafejo Motor Park were also torched, leaving traders in the park mourning their losses.
When PUNCH Metro visited the scene of the incident on Wednesday, the atmosphere was still tense as men of the Nigeria Police Force and some soldiers were observed patrolling the area.
The motor park, usually filled with vehicles, was deserted as the police armoured tanks and patrol vans took over the space.
Broken bottles, shards of glass from shattered windscreens and pebbles, said to have been deployed by some of the hoodlums during the fight, littered the road.
Bloodstains dotted the Oshodi Roundabout, where a man was said to have been shot dead and his corpse taken away by the police.
Buhari’s certificate saga suits now 10
The number of cases filed against the All Progressives Congress presidential candidate, Maj. Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), over alleged non-submission of his academic certificates to the Independent National Electoral Commission, has risen to at least 10.
Our correspondent confirmed 10 of the cases on Wednesday though more suits might have been filed.
Eight of the 10 confirmed suits are before the Federal High Court in Abuja, one before a Chief Magistrate’s Court in Abuja and one other before the Federal High Court in Umuahia, Abia State.
The one before the Chief Magistrate’s Court, a direct criminal complaint, is seeking the trial of Buhari for alleged perjury for making a false claim on oath of possessing academic qualifications.
Jonathan’s excuse for not probing Ekiti tape, weak –APC
The All Progressives Congress has described as unacceptable the excuse offered by President Goodluck Jonathan for not investigating the tape in which some Peoples Democratic Party leaders were purportedly giving orders to a general to help in rigging the June 21, 2014 Ekiti governorship elections.
Jonathan had said last week that security agencies could not investigate the tape because the soldier who recorded the incident, Capt. Sagir Koli, had fled the country.
However, the APC in a statement by its National Publicity Secretary, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, said the President was wrong to have said the audio tape had not been investigated because the army captain who leaked it had not come forward to authenticate it.
It wondered whether the President would have said the same thing if it was the voices of the APC chieftains that were involved in the “illegal act.”
The APC said the security agencies need no prodding or even a presidential directive to launch an investigation into a weighty issue that amounts to a subversion of democracy.
It said, ‘’Some people were found to be undermining democracy using a powerful national institution like the military, and all the President could say is that there will be no investigation until the officer who secretly recorded the tape has come forward to authenticate it. What a disingenuous argument!
Boko Haram abducts Adamawa LG vice-chairman
The Adamawa State Police Command on Wednesday said that the Vice-Chairman of the Hong Local Government Area, Bijida Yakubu, was abducted last week by suspected Boko Haram fighters.
The Public Relations Officer of the command, Othman Abubakar, also told the News Agency of Nigeria, that three vigilante members, that were with Yakubu, lost their lives in the encounter.
Abubakar, who did not give details, however, said policemen investigating the incident had so far recovered the vice-chairman’s shoes.
The abduction was said to have been carried out by Boko Haram members who attacked Gayafa village.
A resident of Hong, who simply identified himself as Hussaini, said, “You know insurgents attacked the village last week. The vice-chairman, who hails from the village, was on an assessment visit with some hunters when the insurgents attacked and over-powered them.
“About seven insurgents were killed in the encounter before they overpowered the hunters and took away the vice-chairman.”
Hussaini claimed that the abducted vice- chairman was later allowed by his captors to call his wife with his cell phone before the device was switched off.
