Amaechi imposes curfew on Rivers
THERE was panic and anxiety in Port Harcourt on Monday following the announcement of an imposition of curfew in the state by the Rivers State Government.
The Secretary to the Government, Mr. George Feyii, who made the announcement said that the curfew would be effective from 7pm to 6am.
Feyii pointed out that the curfew would continue until further notice, adding that the aim was to protect lives and property of law abiding citizens.
According to the statement signed by Feyii, “‘The Rivers State Government has declared a dusk to dawn curfew in the state beginning from Monday, March 30, 2015.
Senate Leader loses seat, Saraki wins
The Senate Leader, Senator Abdul Ningi of the Peoples Democratic Party has lost his bid to return to the Senate, as Isah Misau of the All Progressives Congress was declared the winner of the Bauchi Central Senatorial District.
Declaring the results on Monday, the INEC Collation Officer for the Bauchi Central, Dr. Mohammed Yakubu, announced that Misau scored 208, 741 votes to beat Ningi, who scored 57, 172 votes.
Military frees women, children seized by B’Haram
The Director, Defence Information, Maj. Gen. Chris Olukolade, has said that troops of the Nigerian Army have recovered some women and children who were locked up by insurgents in Gwoza.
Olukolade said that the hostages were being given medical attention and necessary care by troops pending the arrival of troops in the area.
He said that some of the freed hostages were providing useful information to troops on the activities of the soldiers.
Military aids electoral fraud –Okorocha
The Imo State Governor, Rochas Okorocha, has frowned on the way the Peoples Democratic Party “rigged” the elections of Saturday and has therefore called for the outright cancellation of the results in six local government areas of the state.
He also said that the election in the state was full of combined conspiracy with military intervention.
Suswam, Yuguda, Ngige lose senatorial bid
Three Peoples Democratic Party governors have lost their senatorial bid. The governors are Isa Yuguda (Bauchi); Gabriel Suswam (Benue) and Niger State Governor, Babangida Aliyu.
In Anambra state also, a former governor, Chris Ngigie, who represents Anambra-Central, lost his seat.
In Kogi State, the senator representing Kogi-West, Smart Adeyemi, lost to former House of Representatives member, Dino Melaye of the All Progressives Congress
In Benue, Suswam was defeated by incumbent Senator, Chief Barnabas Gemade, in the race for the Benue North-East seat.
Gemade, an APCmember, polled 140,715 votes to beat Suswam.
Suswam, a sitting PDP governor, scored 118,608 votes to lose in his ambition to occupy the senate seat.
Police fire tear gas at protesting APC women
Policemen on Monday fired tear gas at protesting women, who were marching to the office of the Independent National Electoral Commission in Port Harcourt. They were marching to express their grievances over the handling of Saturday’s presidential and National Assembly elections.
The women who were clad in black attire and chanting solidarity songs, and who are members and supporters of the All Progressives Congress, were stopped by heavily armed policemen at the Waterlines axis of the Rivers State capital.
Buhari group calls for Fani-Kayode’s arrest
The Buhari Support Organisations has called for the arrest of Mr. Femi Fani-Kayode, the Director, Media, Peoples Democratic Party Presidential Campaign Organisation, for announcing unofficial results.
The Director, Media and Information of the BSO, Dr. Chidia Maduekwe, made the call on Monday in Abuja at a news conference.
According to Maduekwe, this is the time for security agencies to show their neutrality by arresting Fani-Kayode because the only authority to announce election results is the Independent National Electoral Commission.
Fayose ‘ll defeat APC again, says aide
The Special Assistant to Governor Ayodele Fayose on Information, Youth and Sports, Mr. Lanre Ogunsuyi, has said the outcome of the Saturday’s election signalled the end of the All Progressives Congress in Ekiti State
The Peoples Democratic Party won all the three senatorial districts and the six House of Representatives seats in the state.
“It is now confirmed to whoever is still doubting whether Fayose is indeed a super political champion that the man is more than that, he is also a rare breed.
“In the same token, the outcome of Saturday’s National Assembly election, which made the PDP candidates to defeat all the candidates of APC in both the Senate and House of Representatives, including all the incumbents, shows that all negative claims about June 21, 2014 governorship poll, existed only in the imagination of those that faulted the outcome,” he said.
Youths protest conduct of elections in Abia
A large number of youths from various local government areas in Abia State on Monday protested the outcome of the Saturday elections in the state.
The protesters, who stormed the Independent National Electoral Commission office in the state, displayed placards bearing various inscriptions.
Policemen barricaded the road leading to the INEC office, while the protesters blocked a section of the road leading to the state secretariat and the INEC office.
The protesters alleged that the presidential and the National Assembly elections were full of manipulation and rigging.
Polls: Workers abandon Lagos secretariat over fears of attack
There was confusion in the Lagos State Government Secretariat, Alausa in Ikeja on Monday as a large number of civil servants abandoned their work and fled the secretariat.
It was gathered that many of the workers panicked over the information going round that some people were planning to attack the secretariat.
Also, many of the workers said the government had advised them to leave the secretariat in order to avoid unforeseen consequences of a planned protests over the results of the presidential and the National Assembly elections.
18 Cultists/thugs arested in Oyo during elections.
No fewer than 18 suspected cultists and gunmen, who allegedly caused violence during the presidential and the National Asembly elections have been arrested by the Oyo State Police Command.
PUNCH Metro learnt that the suspects were rounded up by the police in the Mapo area of Ibadan, Oyo State on Saturday.
Our correspondent gathered that the suspects, who wielded guns, belonged to a gang of cultists known as One Million Boys.
According to the police, the gang have been notorious in the area for unleashing violence on residents and taking the advantage of campaign rallies to mobilise for “deadly operations.”
it was learnt that the suspects were apprehended by policemen on patrol with the help of a special squad deployed in the state from Abuja. The cops were said to have engaged the cultists in a shootout and subdued them.
Fire guts two ships in Lagos
Two ships docked at Kirikiri Jetty along the Apapa area of Lagos State went up in flames on Monday, destroying property estimated at millions of naira.
PUNCH Metro learnt that the fire started around 2pm from one of the ships before spreading to the other.
Our correspondent learnt that firemen from the Nigeria Ports Authority and the Lagos State Fire Service were among the several rescue agencies that combated the flames.
The Director of the Lagos State Fire Service, Rasak Fadipe, said the agency was alerted to the incident around 2.32pm, adding that by that time, the fire had razed the ships.(Hmnn... what was in those ships...)
2arrested for tearing PDP posters.LOL
The police in Lagos have arrested two men for allegedly tearing campaign posters and defacing the banners of the state’s governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, Jimi Agbaje.
The suspects, Fisayo Olomojobi, 29, and Toheeb Okanlawon, 31, were said to have committed the act on Osborne Road in the Ikoyi area around 2am.
They were arraigned before an Ebute Meta Magistrate’s Court on counts bordering on unlawful damage and conduct likely to cause breach of the peace.
Court remands suspected robbers for killing hotel manager
A Lagos State Magistrate’s Court sitting at Ebute Meta has remanded three suspected robbers for allegedly stabbing to death a hotel manager, Olalekan Oduwobi.
The suspects, Agbomeji Seun (30), Rasaq Babatunde (30) and Anthony Gbagolo (19), were arraigned on three counts of murder and unlawful possession of firearms.
PUNCH Metro had reported how the suspects sneaked into Imokun Noforija community in the Epe area of Lagos and killed Oduwobi who worked in 12-30 Hotel.
The incident happened on February 25, 2015.
Our correspondent reported that one of the gang members had first scaled the fence into a house when a resident raised the alarm.
He was said to have jumped back into their hiding which was the extension of the 12-30 Hotel where the deceased was working.
It was reported that the resident raised the alarm and awoke other tenants to the danger of the lurking robbers. He was also said to have gone to alert Oduwobi to the danger.
Our correspondent reported that as Oduwobi took a shortcut to surprise the robbers, he was attacked and stabbed to death.
Polls: 15,000 displaced persons protest inability to vote
No fewer than 15,000 Internally Displaced Persons, who were registered voters from Assakio ward in the Lafia Local Government Area of Nasarawa State on Sunday protested against their omission from the presidential and the National Assembly elections.
The IDPs, who displayed leaves, poured into the streets of Lafia around the Bukan Sidi area of the metropolis, appealing to the federal and state governments to tackle the abnormal scenario.
Spokesman for the displaced persons, Mr. Attah Isua, said, “We are more than 15,000 registered voters from Assakio ward with 19 polling units.
“We had sometime written a letter to that effect and advised the authorities concerned to deploy security personnel to the volatile area to enable us cast our votes, which was the place we obtained our Permanent Voter Cards.”
