Suspected cultists kill MAPOLY student.
Some assailants, suspected to be cultists, have clubbed to death a student of the Moshood Abiola Polytechnic, Abeokuta, Ogun State, Omokoleola Agoro, in the Ijebu Ode area of the state.
PUNCH Metro learnt that the cultists ambushed Agoro after a function in his father’s house in the Ita Alapo area of the town on Tuesday, and attacked him with clubs till he became unconscious.
They reportedly escaped from the scene.
Our correspondent gathered that at about 10am, the deceased, who was said to be a year–one student of the institution, was about having a meal when he was called on the telephone. It was suspected that he was called by a close friend.
A source stated that Agoro was lured out of his father’s compound with the phone call before the assailants killed him.
He said, “That kind of killing is usually done by cultists. The boy had come home to attend a function in their family house in Ijebu Ode. His elder sister got wedded during the weekend, and he travelled home from Abeokuta.
“On Tuesday at about 10am, he received a call and shortly afterwards, he went out. People thought he was called by his friends to meet them somewhere. The next thing they knew was that he had been killed. Nobody knows the reason for his death.
“The shocking thing is that they did not even leave his phone behind. They did not want to leave a trace of anything.”
Another source disclosed to PUNCH Metro that Agoro was called on the phone by somebody close to him, which made him to come out of his father’s house.
Our correspondent learnt that it was passersby, who discovered Agoro’s body in a pool of blood and raised the alarm.
It was gathered that the matter was reported at the Obalende Police Division in Ijebu Ode.
It was further learnt that Agoro, who was still gasping for breath at the time, was rushed to the Olabisi Onabanjo University Teaching Hospital, Sagamu, where he later died.
The Public Relations Officer, MAPOLY, Sulaiman Adebiyi, said the polytechnic authorities had not been briefed on the incident.
He said, “We are not aware of the incident. When such incident happens, the police will make an official report to us detailing how it went. We have yet to receive any report as such. So for now, I cannot confirm that incident.”
The Ogun State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Muyiwa Adejobi, confirmed the incident. He added that investigations were ongoing on the matter.
He said, “Although the boy was seriously wounded in the head, he did not die at the scene of the attack. He was confirmed dead at the hospital where he was rushed to. The information the police have is that he was a student of MAPOLY. Investigations are ongoing.”
Efforts to get any of Agoro’s family members or relatives for comment on the incident were not successful as of the time of filing this report.
